Ministry Contact for the Month: Heart of Christ, in Talanga, Honduras

This month, month 4, we worked in their children’s home. Heart of Christ offers refuge to young women who are pregnant by rape, as well as children with special needs AND children awaiting placement in the foster care system. This organization does so much for the community and provides a safe place for young women and children.

When we were there, they were working on constructing a bigger children’s home and classrooms that could accommodate their growing need. We helped with construction, as well as taking care of the children throughout the day.

Heart of Christ is a place of refuge for young women and children. Often, police show up unannounced and drop of young women and children who need a place of solace. Sometimes, they stay longer. Sometimes, they leave the next day. A few days into our time at Heart of Christ, police dropped off a 12-hour-old baby. She had been abandoned and desperately needed to be taken care of. Our team was assigned to her night duty. They had nurses that could handle her daytime needs, but no one who could do her bi-hourly feedings throughout the nights. She is a sweet miracle of a girl, and through taking care of her, I learned so much.

Throughout the days that we didn’t have construction, we worked in the nursery. We helped with teaching and taking care of the 1-2 year olds, like Baby Jafeth.

The girl that stole my heart! Lesley. I miss this beautiful girl so much. She is unable to speak, but her face and eyes communicate everything you need to know. My favorite thing the entire month was seeing her throughout the day and her running to hug me. She really didn’t like letting go. That was a really tough goodbye.

This month was different than the other months. There were a lot of changes in each of my teammates’ spiritual lives. I stepped into a level of forgiveness that I hadn’t ever done before. I took steps of faith that month that were foreign to me, and God didn’t leave me. He was with me the entire way.

It wasn’t all serious, though. We had a lot of “pan” (Spanish word for bread). We spent time watching movies, laughing, and dancing together. It was a great way to end a season with team Reckless Warriors.
